Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Businesses should do anything they can to make a profit.

Model Answer:

I do not agree with the statement that businesses should do anything they can to make a profit. I state my opinion on the following points.

First of all, every company must have its moral code. It means that a company should treat its clients properly and respect their rights. Of cause a company may lose a part of its profit but security of its clients must be on the first place. Otherwise, clients will switch to another company and never be back. For instance, a few years ago “Jonson&Jonson” produced a new type of painkillers. Unfortunately, this product was not tested properly. As a result of this many people died and received injures. The president of the company made a crucial decision to call back all painkillers from all distributors and pay to all injured customers for their treatment. It cost a lot of money for the company but it saved its image and clients. It was a very difficult decision, but the president of the company understood that it would cost him even more in the future because he would not be able to return clients" respect. Loosing customers means for a company loosing its profit.

Second of all, in order to succeed in the modern world companies have to compete with each other. Many companies lose their profit decreasing prices on their products. They do not aspire for extra profit but for clients" satisfaction. Companies do it because they want their products sold and their customers satisfied. They offer discounts, free delivery, free service, free Internet access, good return service, etc. All these are done to make their old customers happy and attract new clients.

To sum up, I think a company, which the only goal is profit will not succeed nowadays. Otherwise, companies that respect their clients and want to see them satisfied will make a fortune.

Thanks to the broad coverage of Internet, a growing number of people take online courses or work at home through computers. As people enjoy the benefits brought by Internet, there are also concerns on downsides of online study and work. In my mind, Internet, as an alternative option, brings more benefits than disadvantages for people to work and study at home.

Admittedly, what people complain most about studying and working online is various kinds of distraction that lowers efficiency. For most people, when they turn on their computer, chatting software, like MSN and Skype, logs on at the same time. The messages popping up time to time never fail to divert people’s attention. In addition, there are numerous interesting news on websites containing countless links that direct users to an endless cyber world. As a result, people may waste too much time entertaining themselves by chatting with friends or browsing websites.

However, the above mentioned drawback of Internet can be avoided when people develop self-discipline. For those people, the advantage of Internet for work and study at home is unparalleled. By studying or working at home, people save much time on traffic, especially for those who have to commute during rush hours to the office or travel long distance to the classroom. Also, there is much time flexibility and people are free to arrange their schedule. More importantly, the amount of knowledge and information available online is so huge that can hardly be contained in the largest library in the world, and the content is so updated that can hardly be taught in any university at such a rate.

In summary, though some of the content online may consume users much time and lower their efficiency of work and study at home, the advantages of Internet are far more obvious for people with strong self-control.

In some countries the widespread use of Internet has given people more freedom to work or study at home instead of traveling to work or college. Do the advantages outweigh disadvantages?

Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings?

Model Answer:

Some people think that old, historic buildings are no need for the city and they should be destroyed and replaced with modern ones. However, other people believe that historic buildings must be preserved in order to know and remember our past. For several reasons that I will mention bellow I agree with those people who want to preserve old, historical buildings.

First of all, by preserving historical buildings we pass our history to our future generations. I think that out children should know their history, learn from it and respect it. People need to know their traditions and customs, which are priceless and irreplaceable. Our history is our knowledge and power. From my opinion we need to preserve and restore historical buildings. By destroying them we show our disrespect to our forefathers and their traditions.

Second of all, by preserving historical buildings a city can attract many travelers. Welcoming tourists a city can get many benefits including money, which can be spent on preserving historical buildings as well as on improving roads and facilities.

Also, many tourists mean a lot of new business opportunities. Another important aspect of this is that businessmen will be willing to build new recreational centers, hotels, movie theaters, shopping centers to make a city more attractive for travelers. In addition to those practical benefits, many people will have the opportunity to get a job. All this is good for the economy of the city.

To sum up, I believe that preserving old, historical buildings can bring only benefits to a city and all humankind.

When all things are considered, young adults of today live more satisfying lives than those of their parents, in my opinion.

这句话当中的“when all things are considered”和“in my opinion“都显得多余。

Young adults of today live more satisfying lives than their parents.

Due to the fact that our grandparents were under an obligation to help their parents, they did not have the options that young people have at this point in time.

Because our grandparents were obligated to help their parents, they did not have the options that young people have now.

The farm my grandfather grew up on was large in size.

The farm my grandfather grew up on was large.

My grandfather grew up on a large farm.

My grandfather has said over and over again that he had to work on his parents" farm.

这里的over and over again就可以改为repeatedly,显得更为简洁:

My grandfather has said repeatedly that he had to work on his parents" farm.

The situation that resulted in my grandfather"s not being able to study engineering was that his father needed help on the farm.

My grandfather couldn"t study engineering because his father needed help on the farm.

There were 25 cows on the farm that my grandfather had to milk every day. It was hard work for my grandfather.

My grandfather worked hard. He had to milk 25 cows on the farm every day.

My grandfather worked hard milking 25 cows daily.

Dairy cows were raised on the farm, which was located100 kilometers from the nearest university and was in an areathat was remote.

The dairy farm was located in a remotearea, 100 kilometers to the nearest university.

In the fall, not only did the cows haveto be milked, but also the hay was mowed and stacked by my grandfather"sfamily.

In the fall, my grandfather"s family notonly milked the cow but also mowed and stacked the hay.

My grandfather didn"t have time tostand around doing nothing with his school friends.

My grandfather didn"t have time toloiter with his school friends.

Profits from the farm were not times they were too small to meet the expenses of running a farm. They werenot sufficient to pay for a university degree.

Profits from the farm were sometimes toosmall to meet operational expenses, let alone pay for a university degree.

Some parents in the United Kingdom decide not to have a television intheir home. They believe that, by doing this, their children will spend theleisure time more creatively. To what extent do you agree or disagree with thisdecision?

I like Hollywood movies because I like them. I like Hollywood movies because its comedies attract me most.

Firstly, in order to know itself better, a country needs to remember thepast. “Why we have these traditions? Why our culture and lifestyle are differentfrom other countries?” Those questions about us can only be answered by thehistory of the country. In addition, from the past, we can also learn lots ofthings. As old person always says “the past just like a mirror which can help usdo better in the future”. Indeed, from the failures and successes in the past,we can seek reasons, thus can avoid making similar mistakes.

句子 “Why we have these traditions? Why our culture and lifestyle aredifferent from other countries?”

不恰当:solve the conflict

不恰当:pinpoint the argument

修改:analyse the argument

修改:deadly/fataldisease

修改:pressing/urgentproblem

不准确:patronage the shop

修改:patronize/frequentthe shop

不准确:an increase trend

Nowadays, the regional disparity in wealth and development is a common problem facing many countries. The overall economic progress normally benefits people living in urban areas but excludes those in rural areas. This trend generates various problems.

To begin with, the imbalanced development between cities and villages leads to unreasonable population mobility. It is true that the rapid progress of urbanization requires support of abundant labor force. However, when too many young people are attracted to cities where there are obviously higher living standards and more job opportunities, the cities will become overcrowded while rural areas will face the shortage of labors. As a result, the resources in cities, like schools, houses and public infrastructure, may fail to meet the demand of a population growing wildly. On the country, the farmland in rustic areas may be left idle and wasted, as people move to cities for jobs.

Secondly, the widening gap between the rich and the poor is the breeding ground of social conflicts and poses potential threat to social stability. On the one hand, the flooding of migrant workers arouses complaints from city dwellers who have to confront more fiercer competition in job market and constant increase of living costs, such as the rents of houses. On the other hand, the striking contrast between city life and rural life casts a shadow over migrant workers. While trying hard to cope with the economic pressure, they still have to bear the jealous psychology. Gradually, there forms two unbridgeable groups of people.

Measures should be taken to deal with problems generated by imbalanced development of different regions. The top priority should be given to boosting economic development in rural areas by improving local education quality and generating job opportunities, so as to retain people.

A rise in the standard of living in a country often only seems to benefit cities rather than rural areas. What problems might this difference causes? How might these problems be reduced?

(Overview):

Seeking an energy holy trinity

Seeking an energy holy trinity

1 NEELIE KROES, the European Union’s competition commissioner, did not mince her words when reporting on Europe’s energy markets on Wednesday January 10th. Europe’s energy firms have failed to invest in networks and so customers are suffering. Those “vertically integrated” energy companies such as Electricité de France (EDF) or Germany’s E.ON, widely dubbed as “national champions”, are effectively behaving like local monopolies. Shy of competition, eager for artificially high prices, they are helping to block the efficient generation, transmission and distribution of energy on the continent.

2 Energy prices vary wildly across Europe. Ms Kroes wants to see cheaper energy, and intends to push suppliers to divest their distribution network and to get them to invest more in transportation systems so that more energy—in the form of gas, or electricity, for example—can flow easily over borders. It is remarkably hard, for example, for gas-poor Germany to import from the neighbouring, gas-rich Netherlands. Companies that dominate national markets have, so far, had little interest in improving the interconnections which would mean lower prices for consumers across the continent.

3 Ms Kroes, of course, will struggle to get her way. The European Commission, which on the same day presented its recommendation for improving EU energy policy, also wants to see the unbundling of ownership, the legal separation of energy suppliers and transporters, something that the integrated energy companies and interested governments, notably in France and Germany, are bound to oppose ferociously.

4 Complicating the matter is an argument over the security of energy supply in Europe. Much has been made of the risk for western Europe of depending too heavily on Russian exports of gas. Russia under Vladimir Putin is prone to using energy exports as a blunt tool of foreign policy, especially when trying to bully countries in its hinterland. Last year Russia interrupted gas deliveries to Ukraine, affecting supplies in central and western Europe too. This week it blocked oil exports passing via Belarus to Europe, though that spat was soon resolved.

5 The risk is that concerns about security of supply may be used spuriously by those in Europe who oppose the sort of liberalisation encouraged by Ms Kroes. The likes of E.ON and EDF may claim that only protected national champions are able to secure supply, by striking long-term deals with powerful foreign suppliers. The Commission disagrees. Such deals are too often politically motivated and far from transparent. Protection has been tried for long enough and evidently has not worked for the internal market, nor have these companies secured the best deals for consumers from the Russians.

6 In contrast, the Commission"s new policy proposes, ideally, a break-up of these companies into suppliers and distributors. (As a second best solution, especially for France and Germany, it recommends the management of the networks by a third party.) Properly independent managers of Europe"s energy networks would have a strong incentive to build interconnecting pipelines and power lines across borders. For the gas market another means of ensuring competition and security would be finding a more diverse range of suppliers, for example by building more terminals for the import of liquified natural gas. It would also be likely to mean lower prices, if the example of liberalised Britain over the past ten years is anything to go by.

7 Whether any of this is likely to happen soon, however, is another matter. The Commission is also calling for European governments to agree on a common effort to reduce carbon emissions by at least 20% by (compared with 1990 levels). If America is willing to play ball, the Commission proposes to reduce emissions by as much as 30%. Achieving either target would mean promoting cleaner cars, a more effective emissions-trading system for Europe, wider use of public transport and a sharp increase in the use of renewable sources of energy, like wind and solar power. All that is laudable enough, but will also require political horse-trading as governments—Europe’s leaders are due to meet in March to discuss the various energy proposals—try to avoid commitments that may hurt domestic energy companies or make European firms less competitive than rivals in America, Asia and elsewhere.

The government has announced that it plans to build a new university. Some people think that your community would be a good place to locate the university.

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of establishing a new university in your community.

Model Answer:

I think it is a great idea to build a new university in my community. However, I think it is a controversial question whether the building of a new university will bring only benefits to our community. In this essay I will analyze advantages and disadvantages of this issue and present my view in favor of establishing a new university in my community.

From the one side, establishing a new university in my community brings many benefits. First of all, a new construction means more job opportunities. I think it would be good for my community because many people have to spend much time driving to their work day in and day out because they could not find a job in our neighborhood. Second of all, a new university is a good chance to meet new people and I like this opportunity. Many students will live in our community. Finally, if a new university is built in my community there is a big chance that I will be willing to enroll in it. I think it is great because it is not far from my place and I do not have to move to another part of the city. Another important aspect of this is that people from my community will have a chance to use new libraries and facilities of a new university. For example some people can take courses and classes there.

From the other side, building a new university can bring some disadvantages. A new construction means noise, traffic jams and different kinds of pollution. In addition to these disadvantages, many young people in our community can cause more noise especially in the evenings.

To sum up, I think that I would support the decision of the government of establishing a new university in my community despite a few disadvantages that could follow this construction. I believe that a new university will increase a chance of many young people to get a higher education, gain more knowledge and experience, which will help them to succeed in today’s world.

Some people enjoy change, and they look forward to new experiences. Others like their lives to stay the same, and they do not change their usual habits.

Compare these two approaches to life. Which approach do you prefer? Explain why.

Model Answer:

Some people like to live in the same house, have the same job and habits all their lives. However, others aspire to changes and new experience. Personally, for the several reasons, which I will explain bellow, I prefer the first approach to life.

First of all, changes in one"s life bring many benefits. One tries new things, gains new knowledge and experience. I think it is great because without changes life becomes boring. I always try to make changes in my life. Moreover, when I feel that my life is boring I do not feel well about it. I feel like I spent those days for nothing. I did not do anything exiting, I learnt nothing interesting and I just waisted my time.

Second of all, people need changes. Furthermore, we need obstacles to overcome and reach our goals. I believe that changes make us stronger, more persistent, more self-confident, and more patient. Also, I feel that all people who succeeded in life like changes and new experience because it is impossible to be the best at some field without perfecting the present knowledge and gain new experience. People catch every opportunity to learn more and change their life for the best.

From the other side, people who like their lives to stay the same are very permanent. They have the same job all their life, the same habits, the same week-ends and even the same years in years out. I think it is boring. What will they tell their children about their lives? What kind of contribution will they make for the society? I think such people are just afraid of changes.

I think curiosity and aspiration to the new experience are two of the main reasons of human evolution. People always wanted to break limits and gain more knowledge and experience. So, people who enjoy change are the engine of human development.

Random Thoughts on the Window

By Qian Zhongshu

It is spring again and the window can be left open as often as one would like. As spring comes in through the windows, so people -- unable to bear staying inside any longer -- go outdoors.

The spring outside, however, is much too cheap, for the sun shines on everything, and so does not seem as bright as that which shoots into the darkness of the house. Outside the sun-sloshed breeze blows everywhere, but it is not so lively as that which stirs the gloominess inside the house.

Even the chirping of the birds sounds so thin and broken that the quietness of the house is needed to set it off. It seems that spring was always meant to be put behind a windowpane for show, just like a picture in a frame.

At the same time it also becomes clear that the door has a different significance from the window. Of course, doors were made for people to pass through; but a window can also sometimes serve as an entrance or as an exit, and is used as such by thieves and by lovers in novels.

In fact the fundamental difference between a door and a window has nothing to do with them being either entrances or exits. When it comes to the admiration of spring, it could be put this way: a door makes it possible for one to go out, whereas a window makes it possible for one not to have to.

A window helps to pull down the partition between man and nature. It leads breezes and sunlight in, and keeps part of the spring in the house. It allows one to sit and enjoy the spring in peace, and makes it unnecessary to go looking for it outside.

Write about the following topic:

In most countries multinational companies and their products are becoming more and more important. This trend is seriously damaging our quality of life.

Do you agree or disagree?

Model Answer:

Multinational companies nowadays find it convenient both to market their goods all over the world and set up production facilities wherever they find it convenient. In my opinion this has had an adverse effect on our quality of life in three main areas.

The first area is their products. Supporters of globalization would argue that multinational companies make high-quality goods available to more people. While this may be true to some extent, it also means that we have less choice of products to consume. When powerful multinational companies invade local markets with their goods, they often are obliged local companies with fewer resources to go out of business. In consequence, we are obliged to buy multinational products whether we like them or not.

This brings me to my second point. It is sometimes said that multinational companies and globalisation are making societies more open. This may be true. However, I would point out that as a result the human race is losing its cultural diversity. If we consumed varied products, societieswherever we live would be more varied. This can be seen by the fact that we all shop in identicalmultinational supermarkets and buy identical products wherever we live.

Thirdly, defenders of multinational companies often point out that they provide jobs. Although this is undoubtedly true, it also means that we have become more valnurable on them, which in turn makes us more vulnerable to their decisions. When, for example, a multinational decides to move its production facilities to another country, this has an adverse effect on its workers who lose their jobs.

All in all, I believe that if we as voters pressured our governments to make multinational companies more responsible and to protect local producers from outside competition, we could have the benefits of globalisation without its disadvantages.
